1 in 4 of us will experience mental health difficulties at some point in our life

Yet it can still be difficult to find the right source of support. Dealing with a mental health problem can be a difficult and stigmatising experience. I like to help individuals to feel empowered so that they can manage their difficulties and find a way to move forward with their lives.

Choosing a Therapist

Choosing a therapist can be a big step, particularly if you have struggled with a difficulty for some time. It is therefore important that you find a therapist that you can be open and honest with and who you think can help you. You are welcome to contact me for an initial consultation, where I can gain a better understanding of what help you might require and whether you and I can work together in addressing your difficulties.

About Me

I'm Dr. Louise Ennew, a Guildford-based Chartered Clinical Psychologist, which means that I use evidenced based therapeutic approaches to help individuals aged sixteen and over reduce their psychological distress.

I provide a confidential, caring, non-judgemental and collaborative environment in which your difficulties can be explored in safe way. I use and adapt the various models I have experience in to suit your circumstances and tailor interventions appropriately to help you move forward and reduce the impact your difficulty has on your life.

Experience
I have worked in the NHS since 2005 in a range of different services. I have worked with adults in both inpatient units and community settings who are experiencing severe and complex mental health problems.

I have a particular interest in group-work and in helping individuals to develop skills to manage intense feelings. Other problems I work with include depression, anxiety, PTSD, OCD and difficulties individuals have with relating to others.

Prior to qualifying, I worked as a trainee clinical psychologist in various placements within the NHS which included a year-long placement with adolescents who were experiencing a range of difficulties including anxiety, depression and eating disorders.

I am currently working in a Complex Needs Service where I work with individuals who have a diagnosis of Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD)/Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Here I work in a team that uses dialectical behaviour therapy (DBT) which involves individual therapy, teaching skills groups and telephone coaching as and when required.

I provide a confidential, caring, non-judgemental and collaborative environment in which your difficulties can be explored in safe way.

Therapeutic Approach

I take a client-centred approach and I utilise my knowledge and experience of different psychological approaches to tailor sessions to suit the needs of you as an individual. The main models I use to inform my practice include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) and psychodynamic concepts. I also use Mindfulness and Narrative Exposure Therapy with individuals when appropriate.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT)
CBT looks at the relationship between thoughts, feelings, behaviour and physical sensations and how these factors can come together to form a vicious cycle leaving an individual with negative thoughts and behaviours which are unhelpful. CBT uses strategies in order to help individuals challenge and modify their thoughts and behaviours.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)
This therapy was originally developed for individuals with borderline personality disorder, also known as emotionally unstable personality disorder, where people often experience intense emotions which can result in self-harming behaviour. DBT is known as the gold standard treatment for individuals with a diagnosis of EUPD/BPD. DBT teaches a set of skills which helps individuals manage their emotions, relationships with others and how to cope when crisis situations develop.

I am currently offering a face-to-face DBT skills group.
If you would like further information or an assessment for this group, please contact me via email.

Mindfulness Based Cognitive Therapy
Initially developed for those experiencing repeated episodes of depression, this therapy can also help individual’s experiencing other difficulties including chronic pain and anxiety. It helps individuals to experience distressing emotions without trying to engage or battle with those emotions.

Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET)
NET is a trauma focused therapy for individuals who have experienced multiple and complex traumas. The therapy involves the development a life-narrative with a focus on traumatic experiences.
